gender roles are constructs, gender is not

So what are you saying then?

That men ARE inherently more logical? That women ARE inherently more nurturing and emotional?

And that's why we have gender roles -- because of course the more "naturally nurturing" women should be caretakers?

Because that's the only conclusion I can come to from what you're saying, correct me if I'm wrong.

NA No, that one's concept/conviction of gender, inner map of body, seems to be biological. Not how you ACT. Otherwise, we wouldn't get butch women (and PLEASE note that includes butch trans women, yes exist), and vice versa.

I feel like you're purposely not getting this, but no.

It's the difference between identity and performance. The performance part, the part where men are supposed to be more logical and women are supposed to be more nurturing and emotional, is constructed. The identity part, the part where you "feel" like a man or a woman and you "feel" like you're in the right or wrong body, is not.

The best way I have seen it explained is by drawing an analogy to phantom limbs. So, if someone loses their leg, they still feel like it's there. The super simplified reason for this is that their brain is telling them they should have a limb there. Their "body map" says "this isn't empty space, it's your arm/leg!" Same thing with gender identity. Your "body map" says "you should have a vagina" or "you should have a penis," and if you happen to have the opposite, it's "this isn't a vagina, it's a penis!" Which fucks with you.

But being more logical and being more nurturing and emotional are gender rolls - things we expect of people based on gender - not gender itself.

no, in fact that's the opposite of what I'm saying. the stereotypes we apply to gender are completely superficial and societal-based. ie; women being more nurturing and men more logical. gender, that is, an intrinsic sense of your identity not reliant upon stereotypes, is not socially constructed, you are born with and develop it over your lifetime. the stereotypes that go along with gender are simply baggage that comes with that identity.
