AO3 Tagging

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
What are your thoughts on tagging fandoms? Like how much does a fic have to draw from Marvel comics to get that tag along with the MCU?

Or does deeply exploring a small bit of info from HoME in a Hobbit movie fic mean you should tag Silmarillion and related works? Or would you expect characters from the Silm to show up on that tag?

How do you feel about just using the catch-all fandom?

etc.etc.

I don't see the problem with using the catch-all in addition to the specific media -- unless the characters your work is about are ONLY in MCU. But even then anyone browsing has the character tags to guide them.

I'm not sure about the rest, though.

For instance, with MCU and Marvel comics...if there's only a brief throwaway line referencing the comics, I wouldn't tag it. If you heavily explore a specific comic arc or base your fic or characterization off the comics, then tag comics. But beyond that...I guess whatever feels appropriate to you. There's no rulebook, and I imagine everyone feels a bit different about it.

For your second example, I'd say if you want to tag something Silmarillion that isn't primarily Silmarrillion maybe you should mention it in the notes before the beginning of the fic?

I like catch-all fandom tags, if there is one established (because there are a lot of fandoms this could apply to), although I'd also like to know which version specifically you're writing for and for that to be tagged, too. I wouldn't consider "Marvel comics" or something like that to be a catch-all, though. I'd expect that to be a tag for the comics specifically. I haven't read any MCU/Marvel fic, so I don't know what's the done thing in that fandom, i.e. would you use both MCU and the comics tags (and possibly a catch-all tag, if available), or just the tag that applies most to the version you are writing for? I think if it's an MCU story, then as long as you tag MCU, you can tag for comics too because anyone looking for comic-only fic will see the MCU tag and know to back away, while those who don't mind a fic with both can have a look.
