Phone anxiety?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Baah... I had an interview a couple weeks back. Thought it went well... or at least okay. Decided to go for the follow-up call.

Well... gah... let's just say curse my phone anxiety. If they were thinking of hiring me before, they sure as hell aren't now.

That thirty seconds was harder than the whole interview and I hate that.

So, what I'm getting at is... anyone else generally fine talking with people, but suddenly feel anxiety when talking on the phone? Like... is that normal? I await the day texts are more acceptable to hiring managers...

I am TERRIBLE at talking with people. Like, I had to talk to someone for like 3 minutes on a phone for my boss (he was on hold) and I broke out into sweat.

What helps me the most is writing down everything I need to say (information, questions, who I need to talk to), including my own name.

I have bad phone anxiety, but I have bad face to face anxiety as well, so not quite the same as you OP. But I do think its common? I hear a lot of people mention having anxiety around phones.

I HATE calling people on the phone unless it's a coworker, close friend, or a member of my immediate family, since I call those people enough for it to be routine. Everyone else... I'll put tat off as long as possible.

I find phone interviews so much harder. Talking on the phone is hard.

You're not alone. I have terrible phone anxiety and am usually okay talking face to face. I did manage to deal with most of my last hiring process through email, which was great.

Best of luck getting a job (that one or another), anon.

I hate phones. I ESPECIALLY hate cold-calling. If I have to call a company/store/whatever for whatever reason, I've usually got my questions/thoughts written up and on hand because I'll panic when a stranger answers and be all, "OMG WHO AM I CALLING WHAT AM I DOING?"

Funnily enough, I didn't mind being on the receiving end of calls at work (I mean, I worked in retail for over ten years so you can't really avoid phones...) I guess because it's usually specific 'set' conversations that I was working with so I didn't have that anxiety about not know what to say.

For me it's because I have to see someone's face in order to get social cues, like whose turn it is to speak and where the conversation should go and such. On the phone, it's goddamned impossible for me to function properly, and I hate it.

That's me too. I need to be able to see people in person to read the social cues. I absolutely despise talking to people on the phone unless I know them really well. It makes me very anxious, and I will do whatever I can to avoid it.
