I found out that a celeb who I've looked up to who said women aren't funny/shouldn't be comedians/etc. I was very upset to discover this and I made a post on tumblr about being upset. The backlash I got for saying I was sad was incredibly fast and totally unexpected. I blocked the a few people on tumblr to avoid the drama, but one of them used another account to contact me again, which I also blocked. And when I went incognito today to see if it had all blown over, all I saw were posts about how terrible I was and how I was a baby and how the celebrity wasn't at fault and that other celebs have said the same. I know I shouldn't care, but I'm just shocked at how quickly these bloggers turned on me and at how angry they got in such a short amount of time! I feel terrible about it! :(

Tumblr is a cesspool. Don't feel bad, you did nothing wrong.

Tumblr is a really weird little world. Having things to call out is a kind of social currency there, so there are some (the minority, I'm sure, but very vocal) users who actively look for things to whip people into a frenzy over.

Which is irrelevant. That sounds like it sucks. I hope it dies down soon :(

internet + anonymity = asshole

It seems concentrated in places like tumblr or popular message boards. Mob mentality makes it even worse.

Trust me, over 99% of those posters wouldn't have the gonads to say any of that to your face in real life.

I mostly agree (obviously not everyone on the internet is an asshole, but the anonymity makes some feel more comfortable being assholes), though that doesn't necessarily make it any less upsetting.

I'm sorry that happened to you, OP. The people who won't leave you alone need to find something better to do with their time. (And frankly have a problem for being so angry with you for expressing a harmless opinion they don't agree with.)

It even sounds like you had a point, but what can you do? :/ Hopefully it'll all die down soon.
