I understand why her character in the books might offend some but she was probably one of the most sympathetic characters and had a well defined character arc.

We never hear of Margot until Hannibal where she's already the butch steroid addict lesbian, that's not much character development or character arc.

In a way, Margot's pre-book arc by 'becoming gay' was giving to Alana. It was never explicitly mentioned that she was bisexual until she & Margot became a couple. You could easily argue that the trauma of finding out that the man you've been boffing is a cannibalistic serial killer would definitely put you off men ;)

I mean with her relationship with Barney for example.

It's a pity that Fuller wasn't able to use any characters from Silence of the Lambs because I would have definitely liked to have seen Barney.

I'm going to guess the large black female orderly was supposed to be a genderbent version of him.

Kind of like how they took Benjamin Raspail and made him Franklin Froideveaux.

I did think that, but Hannibal does murder a nurse sometime before Red Dragon so I fear for her continued existence :(
