Is this what it's like to feel old?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a casual fan of Yu-Gi-Oh when I was a little kid, and a handful of recent discussion threads here inspired me to start re-watching the show. A few episodes in I had a pseudo-epiphany where I realized that for the first time, I was watching this show as someone who is older than most of the main cast, whereas when I originally watched it I was younger than any of them.

Can't remember exactly which episode it was, just that at some point the realization sank in that I now view these characters as young whippersnappers when I used to see them as older and more mature than myself. That, combined with the realization that, "Holy shit I'm closer in age to Pegasus than I am to Yugi!" gave me this sort of... I guess you'd call it dissonance? I don't even know. It felt weird.

Also, I can't take Kaiba seriously anymore. You expect me to believe that this kid is running a friggin' multi-million dollar corporation all by himself? LOL no.

I know that feeling. It's odd to rewatch a show that you first watched when you were around the protagonist's own age. I felt that way about Gundam Wing. Of course, since the ages in that series are so insane and everyone is ridiculously young no matter how old and adult-esque they appear, I am basically older than everyone, yes. I certainly am not allowed to have crushes on the Gundam pilots anymore, either, haha...

I suppose I can count myself fortunate that the only YGO character I ever crushed on was Mai Valentine, who is an adult in canon. Still totally acceptable for me to find her crush-worthy!

Although in retrospect, the age difference makes her relationship with Joey rather awkward.

OMG enjoy your rewatch. I loved rewatching that show as an adult.

When I find out the ages of wrestlers I like and they're the same age or or slightly older than me, it weirds me out.

I have been enjoying it, very much! It's been so long, I totally forgot how bizarre this show could get at times, and I'm really loving re-discovering the weirdness.

I love that feeling! I don't remember ever taking a years-long break from anything I loved as a kid though -- I still re-read/re-watch the things I loved back then.

I would re-read the Harry Potter books so frequently that it crept up on me veeerrrrrryyyy slowly, but every. Single. Birthday. I would go "wow, I'm twelve. I'm older than they were when they broke through a magic obstacle in Sorcerer's Stone." Then "wow, I'm thirteen. I'm older than they were when they fought a giant basilisk with a sword." It's SO WEIRD and so cool at the same time :)

For some reason I've never had this problem with books, even though I re-read my childhood favourites fairly regularly. Like, on some level I'm aware that yes, the characters ARE younger than me, but it doesn't have much of an affect on how I view them. For some reason there just isn't that weird dissonance I'm getting now with YGO. Maybe it's because with book characters I can't actually see them or hear their voices the way I would if they were in a TV show?

BTW thanks for reminding me I need to re-read the HP books again soon. Haven't done that in a while!

...Have you ever seen Yu-Gi-Oh The Abridged Series?

Parts of it, but not the whole series. I should probably make time to watch it.

Go watch it. It's amazing. :)

Yep. I grew up watching Friends in my (pre)teens. The characters are in their early/mid twenties at the start of the show. The idea is that their lives are a mess (like the theme song explains) but now I'm 31 and...they had a really good thing going there.

Based on what I've seen of Friends (which admittedly is not very much), the protagonists are indeed VERY well off for twenty-somethings. Makes me a bit jealous, not gonna lie.

Rewatching Friends now makes me feel the same way. I guess it feels really disingenuous now knowing what the cost of rent is in NY. There's no way they could afford their apartments with only one extra roommate considering the jobs they had.

It wasn't by himself, right? he had like a committee (that tried to kill him like...5 times).

Sure, he's got the committee, but he's still the head honcho. He definitely has a degree of control over his company that someone his age probably should not have.

Well, no actually, he pulled a coup on Gozaburo and forced him out (the window, and to his death) when he was 16.

He did inherit Gozaburo's board after that, though. the "big 5" handled the boring parts of the business ( and plotted his death more than once).

(Subbed YGO is slowly appearing on Crunchyroll - I'm so happy I can poke poeple to watch it.)

Man, the subs are a hundred times better, and this is coming from someone who is not the *tiniest* bit of weeaboo or an anime snob of any sort. I barely watch any anime, and don't really know anything about Japan. And I don't care about seeing onscreen violence or not or anything like that. It's just objectively a hundred times better in terms of writing, plot, motives, characterization.

agreed.

(Also, Kaiba's seiyuu is 10x better just in "tone of voice.")

...I always thought Kaiba was a young adult when I was a kid. Like, 20 or so. I was totally weirded out when I found out he was supposed to be the same age as everyone else. (I guess it also gave me some kind of thrill to see a young adult taking a teenager so seriously he obsessed over beating him and stuff.)

But I think I mostly felt that, like most things in yugioh (the duels, etc), the societal rules of that universe were more medieval than contemporary so the whole "teenager inheriting a fiefdom/company" thing was just the way things rolled.

"the societal rules of that universe were more medieval than contemporary so the whole "teenager inheriting a fiefdom/company" thing was just the way things rolled."

That... makes a surprising amount of sense. Huh.

I wonder if anyone's written fic really exploring the implications of a fictional universe that runs on such strange (from a real-world perspective) logic?

NGL this is pretty much my #1 interest in any and all fictional works (especially kid's books/movies/shows) that run on logical assumptions that wildly deviate from the real world's. I love it.

But I think the only time I've seen it explored in reasonable depth is in US superhero comics?

90's anime is THE WORST with ages. If they look like adults but are reoccurring characters, they are 17. At highest, maybe 22, but that's a stretch.

I'm a little afraid to re-watch YGO even though I want to because I don't want it to be ruined by the fact that I've consumed a lot more media (including anime) since I watched it the first time - I mean, YGO was basically my gateway fandom - and I might not like it at much. :/

I still consume media with teens though so I don't think that part would bug me.

You and that secret have reminded me of my YGO obsessed-phase I went through in high school. I read and posted fanfiction on ff.net and got interested in ancient Egypt and read all the manga as it came out and got into playing the card game. Fortunately my brothers shared my interest to a degree and would read the manga when I got it from the library, and play the card game too. We used to take our decks to piano lessons and the two who weren't having a lesson at the moment would duel till it was their turns. Good times.
