Gently pointing out a friend's rather obliviously one-sided view of the world isn't one-upping them with an anecdote. It's merely pointing out that they have blinders on and that if they removed them, they'd see a completely different view.

That isn't one upping? Like...did anywhere in the secret indicate the guy friend was going, "GOD, Women just don't udnerstand my pain"

Well, no. Not if OP is pointing out that the issue her friend describes is very similar to an issue most women have with representation of ideal femininity in the media. In fact, I'd say it puts them on more of an equal playing field, it's just that the male friend would realize it.

Nnnnnno. Gently pointing out that a person's real experience is wrong because it's not about you isn't removing their blinders, it's attempting to make everything about you.

You seem to be projecting a little... well, a lot, actually. Nowhere does the secret say that the OP planned to tell their friend they were wrong. I'm sorry if this has happened to you, but you really need to address those specific issues with your friends/acquaintances and not assume that everyone else is in the same situation.

But I was replying to a comment that WAS about telling someone they were wrong, so you don't.

Telling someone their view is incomplete isn't the same thing as telling someone they're wrong. It's like looking out a window and only being able to see half of the house across the street because of where you're standing. If your friend says that if you step to the left so you can see the whole house, they're not telling you that no, you don't really see a house at all because you only see half of it.
