I don't understand this. Why do they even bother to read fic if they don't like any? Just in the hopes that they will someday encounter one they like?

Probably. I've got fandoms where I legit hate about 90 percent of the fics I've read, but I keep trying, because I want more of those characters than I'm getting from the source material.
