Vegan pet owner proud about all their dogs being vegan but blogs about her confusion on why they're rapidly losing weight and lethargic and even links back to their vegan store which makes it incredibly easy to call the RSPCA to do a welfare check on them.

I don't have anything against vegans, but I don't like people making their pets be vegan if they aren't animals that naturally eat vegetables/plants primarily.

I'm sorry anon but this was a few years back! I'm not going to be able to refind it, I've got so many vegans blocked and their usernames are all the same!

That's awful. Like, I don't know how you can even convince yourself that dogs or cats can survive on a vegan diet. They literally are carnivores, with a digestive system built to process meat (unlike humans who are omnivores and can survive on both diets).

Correct for cats. For dogs, they are actually omnivores, who evolved by eating human garbage. Plus, wolves, from whom they descend, eagerly eat the semi-digested stomach contents of herbivores pretty much before anything else. It is theoretically possible for dogs to eat a vegan diet but you need to be really careful about how you do it. The Guinness Book Record for longest living dog was a vegan dog.

Survive =/= thrive. It's a diet that can work for few dogs with even fewer careful owners

Also Bramble is only the 4th longest living dog from a healthy working breed and all the longest living dogs are noted as uncharacteristic exceptions. Max the mutt is now the oldest and almost made it to 30! I assume bramble was the longest LIVING dog at the time that record was published.

And does not negate that after this user put their dogs on a vegan diet, less than a month later they had lost drastic weight and were lethargic.

Long living dogs are pretty cool but they've all been amazing outliers. Dogs could survive on trash but I wouldn't say that's good for them even if they hit the 20 year mark XD

There's actually some debate about that, whether dogs are carnivores or omnivores. They certainly don't tend to thrive on a meat free diet and dairy is quite bad for them.

There's definitely some support for the idea that dogs ought to eat less meat than most dogs usually do, for health reasons (mostly, the processed meat that comes in dog food isn't good in the huge regular quantities dogs usually get fed), but that meat is still usually important - not strictly necessary, but def more important than for humans.

Yah, some people just feed their dogs canned crap, or fancier, muscle meat, and almost nothing else. Throw some vegies and rice in there (some store cans/dried food have these now), maybe some lamb hearts and the like. Chicken necks or bones for the teeth.

Chicken legs?
I'm not a dog owner, so I have to honestly ask: When I was younger, I was constantly told to never, never ever give a dog chicken or other poultry bones because bird bones are hollow and can splinter wenn a dog is chewing on them, potentially injuring the dog. Isn't that a thing anymore?

That's cooked, not raw. Give raw chicken necks to dogs. Predators do fine eating birds they catch :)

My parents' dogs are both vegetarian (though not vegan - they eat eggs). The first one was initially switched to vegetarian food when she was young solely due to allergies, and she was so surprisingly healthy and free of many of the health issues she would be expected to get (according to our vet) that when we got another dog, we put him on the same diet. It's worked just fine for both of them for a decade, in fact they've been much healthier than most dogs we know, though my parents keep a good eye on protein-rich supplementary food, and calcium supplements too, not strictly dog food formula. Dogs are okay with this, really. They don't need meat -- although for sure, meat is the easiest way to not fuck up a dog's diet. If they're vegetarian, you have to be careful, and put a lot more effort into supplementing their diet.

It's CATS that absolutely cannot survive without meat, due to their needs for particular elements found only in meat.

Technically dogs can eat plants but it is still much healthier for them to eat all or mostly animal products AFAIK.

ETA: apparently dogs can do well with less meat than I thought. They def still need a lot of protein, though.

(Cats, of course, are obligate carnivores.)
