I was glad when they went out of their way to confirm that Scott is hispanic in-show. For a while I was pretty sure they were just ignore Tyler's ethnicity and having him play white. One of the few good things Teen Wolf has done.

What is "playing white"? Because Hispanic people don't go to high school? Can't get jobs with vets? Can only have stereotypically mexican home decor and MUST celebrate Dia De Los Muertos? Please.

Wait, hold up: Do I have to turn in my Hispanic card because I had a Sweet 16 instead of a Quinceanera? I hope not, because I'm counting on it for some scholarships.

While AYRT did word it badly, I'd imagine they meant that instead of just having his character be white (since I guess he can pass) or not specifying, they explicitly made his character Mexican-American.

But, I mean, you can LOOK AT HIM and tell he's not white?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-27 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. To my European eyes he looks white, and by that I mean if he were European I'd say he's possibly from a southern country (Spain, Italy etc.) which doesn't make him PoC.

NA: Does he look European-race to you in this pic? I didn't think so but I'm not European.

To my European eyes, yes, sure. Southern-European, definitely. Spanish, Italian, Greek - I would believe all of those in a heartbeat.

ayrt Thanks for clarifying, I will revise my Euro-goggles!

Another Euro nonnie and I think Hoechlin looks a lot like a guy from Turkey/Greece. At least, that would have been my first assumption if I had met him here in Europe.

Not what I meant at all, and I am a latina too so chill. All I meant is: a lot of times hispanic actors who don't have dark skin or otherwise fit a visual stereotype are made to play white characters. Raul Esparza does it, Laura Harring does it, I'm sure other lighter skinned hispanic actors do it. Hell, I have people thinking I'm Italian sometimes cause I don't fit their visual stereotype of what the media feeds them is "hispanic." So it was nice to have the writers confirm the character is hispanic cause otherwise I am sure a lot of people would insist no there is no way Scott could be hispanic his last name is McCall after all!!
