I understand that feeling, though I've never had it as bad as that. I don't know how old you are but when I was a teenager, most people didn't even know what fandom was, what it meant to be a fan and if it did they pictured the weirdest kind of Trekkies that got mocked on tv. So yeah, I kept quiet about what I was up to online, never made fandom friends. My immediate family sort of knew, but there too it was a bit of a joke.

Maybe it's because fandom's gone mainstream, maybe it's because I'm older now, but these days I care a lot less. I still 'hold back' around other people on occasion (mostly because I realize that simply because something interests me doesn't mean it interests them), but I refuse to be embarrassed about what I like and how much I like it. Other people have hobbies and interests I find ridiculous and I don't judge them for it, whatever makes them happy is fine by me. So why should it be different for me?
