Actually, it's a little like Tolkien purists who despised the movies, and a little like the nitwits who refuse to see Ant-Man "because it glorifies spousal abuse." People get bent out of shape over adaptations and reimaginings, but also over stupid fan theories.

Now, it's not unique in that by any means - if anything, at this point, it would be stranger for a Star Trek show to have a strong start. But it really didn't help, especially since people were already kind of skeptical given the concept.
It's not all about fan rage. There are valid reasons to be iffy on it.
