[Knights Errant]

transcript: This is my favorite comic with prominent queer characters in it. It's so frustrating to me when there's this whole "this is why trans/homophobes are wrong" soapbox or the characters get outed shittily in the name of representation. Or the whole thing's just about how being queer sucks.

So I'm glad this is about some characters who are mercenaries and happen to be queer. But it's sad to me that the bar's so low I'm just happy to have something where the plot's first, the queerness is second.

(This scene isn't gay, by the way.)

I just hate how slowly Knights Errant updates and also that it's basically being redone. I NEED TO KNOW WHATS HAPPENING.

I gotta say, personally, that plot first thing is in fact better and not indicitive of a low bar at all, but rather the opposite.

If the queerness is first, usually the plot is going to be locked into certain directions which can be boring and repetitive. And frankly, as the enemey straight guy, I'm more interested in reading a story that puts plot first over a cause I have less stake in.

I actually get really annoyed every time I see something about this comic because of some things that went down with the author/fans which completely turned me off the comic. I also don't agree that it's not a case of soapboxing but I stopped reading it a long, long time ago so maybe it's different now. Whatever, I can't be bothered to find out.

What happened?

It's several things and this will probably contain spoilers.
Back in the day, before the comic even got started, I was watching the artist on livejournal. She had the first character sketches there and kept referring to one of the characters as a "lady disguised as a knight" several times. It was locked some time after that, so most people weren't aware of it. Comic came out and male appearing character with it. Turns out he was suddenly a trans guy - which in itself is perfectly fine, but considering the way that character was portrayed before, it really seemed a bit like the author basically did it because it was the "in" thing to do at the time.
Then there was the thing with the comic being very aggressively promoted as a "two male gay main character knights" story. Turns out not only is one of the characters a trans guy, the other character is a woman in disguise! Making the relationship still queer, but at the same time effectively het. Which also wouldn't have been too bad in itself, but as soon as it was revealed, both the author and some of the fans started to get a very unpleasant "haha! Stupid slash fans! We tricked you into reading het! Stupid simple minded slash fans!" attitude - even though I never saw a single slash fan complain about it.
All in all, it was pretty terribly done.

Wait, really? She's my new hero.

Well to each their own. If spiteful strawman-loving people delight you, that's your problem.

a guy dating a girl is not "queer"

(Anonymous) 2015-08-29 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
Transgender people identify as queer all the time. "Queer" doesn't always mean "same-sex relationship". If a trans man and a woman want to call their relationship "queer" then I wouldn't be the one to object, and I'm actually gay.

AYRT
It's queer as in "in involves a queer character" but the relationship itself, as I said, is het.

I don't know this comic, but that sounds just a bit out there to me. It'd have to be really well done for me to enjoy that. If it feels soapboxey/preachy, I really hate it, but if feels genuine enough for the plot then it could be cool, I guess.

Well from what I gathered, it's basically gotten rebooted or something so maybe it's better now? So you might go ahead and try reading it. I'm just not interested anymore due to the things I mentioned, but you might enjoy it.

You could try Midnighter by DC! Gay hero who's a badass, plenty of plot, action and romance.

So this completely dates me, and it's not a comic book, but OP if you're interested in "merceneries who just happen to be queer", you should check out the Thieves' World books (if they're still in print?). The Stepsons/Sacred Band are a mercenary corps composed primarily of pairs of warriors intimately partnered with one another.

historically based?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-29 05:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Plot first and queerness second is how it should be. Anything that's just solely focusing on the sexuality of characters is going to be bad, in my opinion.

There are more updates?

Yaaay! I love Knights Errant! Real quality. The creator can take all the time they like.
