TW suicide

DA

Not touching on shooting others but on the topic of men and guns, I think it's worth pointing out that men are also more likely to use guns on themselves as a suicide method too. Which supports the idea that men are more likely to use guns for whatever reason

Is that true? I don't know if I believe that about men being more likly to use guns on themselves, but if it is true, why do you think that is?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_differences_in_suicide#Differing_methods_by_gender

"Males frequently complete suicide via high mortality actions such as hanging, carbon-monoxide poisoning, and firearms."

It's true.

Hm, Fair enough.

I don't know if I'd attribute this to any difference in mindset, but simply what the person is likely to have access to in their home. More men own guns than women, so it presents itself as a more likely option with impulsive suicides.

DA power. because of power. guns give power, or the feeling of power. men lack power and women don't. men need guns to feel more powerful than they are.

For suicide????

OP

For everything I'd guess. And what is suicide if not the last desperate attempt to gain some power and control over your situation. I want to die with something that makes me feel comforted in my arms, I can see why someone might want to choose to die with something that makes them feel powerful in theirs

No, for suicide, men are more likely to choose methods that have a high success rate (guns, jumping in front of trains, etc.). Women tend to do things like overdose on pills or slit their wrists... basically, things that aren't quite as guaranteed to be fatal.

It's not about power, it's about the finality of it.

Re: TW suicide

That seems plausible

"men lack power and women don't"

oooookay.

Maybe you meant, men often FEEL like they lack power, because they are socialized to expect to have power while women aren't?

Men lack power? What?

Re: TW suicide

(Anonymous) 2015-08-29 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
men lack focus and a will to overcome. I wouldn't say they lack power, but they lack drive in a way women don't.

I have no idea what this means, and I'm usually wary of any sort of gender essentialism.

Considering the suicide sucess rate of guns, clearly ours is the superior drive!

"men lack power and women don't."

What strange backward universe do you even live in?

I think I can translate what OP means; Men lack personal power and women don't, not societal power which men hold in spades, which I have to say I agree with.

What is personal power? Sounds like you can define it any way you want.

Many studies show either that women have anywhere from twice the prevalence of depression/anxiety compared to men, or to being on par (when alcohol abuse etc is taken into account).

I'm p sure men commit the vast majority of crimes in general. It's either because they're daring superior risk-takers upon whom the weight of the world rests and tiny ladybrains just can't understand, or because they're morally defective violent testosterone-poisoned scum, depending on which side of the ARGH GENITALS ARE WHAT MATTER MOST IN LIFE spectrum you ask.
