Completely unsupported by any data but I've heard some people posit the idea that it comes from the fact that women "don't like to make a mess" to leave other people to clean up and so tend to favor poisoning and stuff like that. I'm sure that's not all of it and definitely won't apply to everyone but it's an idea.

It might have to do with the social component often put on women - to care about others and be worried what people think, etc.

This might be outdated though.

Supposedly, female murderers are more likely to use things like poison than physical violence, and this can extend to suicide (taking pills rather than shooting oneself).

That's kind of ironic, considering that arsenic poisoning--popular with female murderers--is a horrifically ugly way to go. And a lot of female suicides use things like Lysol or bleach...

Could be. Seems a little old fashioned, but it could be those old fashioned ideas still seeping into our brains telling us we need to be lady like.

Women are increasingly using more violent - and more effective - means of suicide. Statistically in Australia anyway.
