Video Games: Plot or Gameplay?
(Anonymous) 2015-08-29 03:28 am (UTC)(link)I'm saying that plot is a very important and vital part of a well-made video game. The player will not be engrossed in the game if they don't care about its story or characters. In a few months, they'll forget what happened in a plotless game (or one with a weak plot), but a game with a well-written plot will stay with them for a long time. A lot of games on players' favorite games lists feature games with a focus on plot, such as Mass Effect, The Last of Us, The Legend of Zelda, Fire Emblem, etc.
She's saying that gameplay is way more important than plot, and plot should not be the focus of the game. It's more vital to have a constantly-entertaining game that the player doesn't get bored of playing, and that text just drags on and on, wasting valuable time. Her definitions of these types of games are all indie titles, including FTP tablet-based games and games on Steam that can be completed in an hour or so. The examples I listed were, in her opinion, boring, and she said they were more like an interactive story.
While I agree that gameplay is important (why play a game if the gameplay is weird or irritating), I think she couldn't be more wrong in saying that story takes away from a game. What are your thoughts on this? I just want to know what other people think.
Re: Video Games: Plot or Gameplay?
If the games plot is great but gameplay is shit, I"m looking for all the cutscenes on youtube and that's that.
Gameplay is slightly more important, but it's two pillars leaning against each other. You take away too much of one, both are gonna fall.
Re: Video Games: Plot or Gameplay?
I would rather play a slightly frustrating game with a great story than a game with great gameplay where I didn't care about the events unfolding.
Not that both aren't important, but story (that includes characters, because sometimes the characters can be complex and fascinating even as the main plot is sort of generic) definitely means more to me.
