I really want to get in to watching some J dramas but the sheer number of hoops ones needs to jump through to get subtitles has put me off the whole genre. :(

Have you tried Crunchyroll? They do dramas for free. Though, I'm not sure if they're Kdramas or Jdramas or both. I don't like them, so I don't watch. But yeah, free!

And most of the time available for many countries!

I get why people hate Crunchyroll, but they're the most accessible legal distributor of anime, dramas and manga*

Their manga viewer is awful though.

The main drama I had my heart set on is called Neko Zamurai, although googling it just now I've discovered that someone has liberated the subtitles from the locked filing cabinet in a disused lavatory and uploaded the episodes to a streaming site of dubious legality. It might be only the first episode though.
