What really sucks is how little respect translators have for the original artists.

Just keep in mind that no matter how much they cry or insist, 'stealing' their scans is no worse than them stealing the original author's manga, scanning, translating and posting it on the Internet. They don't own those scans. The author does. Scanlators have no right to tell people to not upload the scans to other websites.

I was coming to post this exactly. I can't stand scanlators whining about "their" scans being "stolen."

As someone who has scanned and scanslated something myself (some doujinshi, though, not official manga), I have to agree. If I scanslated a manga, I wouldn't want my name attached to it, because it's still illegal. If the publishers found out, I wouldn't want them to find the source of the scans.

With the doujinshi I scanned, I made sure they don't spread, though, because there is the risk that if the doujinshika found out, they'd stop drawing doujinshi and that would be everyone's loss. Their goal is not making money with their doujinshi, but at the same time they can't just eat the costs, so they have to sell them for money. Spreading scans of their doujinshi is counter-productive, so I prefer it if as little as possible people have access to the scans.

I don't even see the point in being so protective of their scans. It's not like they're getting money out of it. Literally the only reason scanlations exist is to spread comic and doujin to people who wouldn't be able to read them otherwise. Isn't it a bit counter-productive to stop people from posting them on other sites?

They have to be protective because if they get found out then they could get into trouble meaning no more translations. It's a double edge sword. The fans want translations but then complain about it being hard to get, but the only way to continue is to do it under the table.

The majority of the sites where the scans are uploaded exist solely for profit though. Obviously both the scanlator and the reposter are doing something illegal, but usually the former's goal is to make unknown series more accessible while the latter just wants to make easy money off of other people's work.

That's why I use Adblock on those sites!

Yeah, it's kinda lose-lose situation. The only way I can see translations for certain stuff is if a fan translates it, but I feel guilty because it's not something that they own.

If it's something you feel guilty for, just make sure to buy the official version if (and for some properties, it really is a pretty big if) it's released in your language.

Reading/watching fan translations is pretty far on the light side of morally grey, since if that's all that's available, it's not losing the creators any sales - the fans that rely on scanlations/fansubs generally don't have legitimate access to the thing at all, let alone in a language they speak.

On the one hand, they don't own the original works. On the other hand, good scanslating takes a shit-ton of work so I get some of the protectiveness.

Same applies to fanfic authors who get upset that someone used one of their OCs or head-canon in another fic. Dude, you guys ripped off someone for your fanfic and thought it fair enough; now you are being fanficced and you are getting precious about it? 'kay, but you better delete your fic too.

I hate when they make you do the equivalent of "GET ME THE JADE MONKEY FROM THE TEMPLE OF DOOM" shticks it involves. I usually end up not downloading it and looking somewhere else, or just waiting for someone else to upload it to a more accessible place.

Ugh. There are so many translators that lord their power over everyone else. They'll be like 'ah this is so funny~' and then people have to beg to know what it says.

I mean, I can respect them for learning a new language but can we skip the power trip please.

My favorite is when you literally have to go around the post trying to find the password, which has been cleverly hidden within. That stuff is not fun, it's just draining.

My "favorite" group likes to password encode every file. The password must be opened every time you open it. The files cannot be unzipped, the files will always be invisible and inaccessible. Sometimes they switch from a standard zip file, to pdf. They're just all over the place. They definitely enjoy fucking with us.

Jesus Christ, that sounds absolutely ridiculous. I've heard about the PDF stuff, but encoding pretty much everything is taking it too far.

I really want to get in to watching some J dramas but the sheer number of hoops ones needs to jump through to get subtitles has put me off the whole genre. :(

Have you tried Crunchyroll? They do dramas for free. Though, I'm not sure if they're Kdramas or Jdramas or both. I don't like them, so I don't watch. But yeah, free!

uh well, a lot of the time those password protections and hidden links/websites are done to protect the scanlator from legal repercussions– which would shut down your ability to read the scans at all

it's not all about ego and elitism, some of it is a genuine attempt to stay under the radar as much as possible

Except, as anon pointed out above, they make it obvious they have scanlations so all the hidden links/websites/passwords in the world won't protect them.

Bullshit. If they want to avoid the legal repercusions they just need to release the chapters anonimously on a image board or upload them directly to batoto and the chapters will never be traced back to them.
