As someone raised in a birdless environment, I... I just don't feel I know parrots well enough to include them in my fictions:

(Plus, I'm a but afraid of being flamed by the Avian Justice Warriors!)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-29 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think we need to birdify your environment. For... for the sake of literature. Yes. Definitely that.

Write to moa and ask if it's possible for her to consider making Parrot-ful Boyfriends?

Why am I giggling over this so much?

That game's existence still cracks me up. They should totally do a parrot version.

(And OP, the parrot in the secret is adorable!)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-29 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I know of an ex-parrot...

They're pretty awesome. I'd like to see more birds in everything.

Wouldn't they be the most common of birds in fiction?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-29 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
This is an admirable writing goal and I support it 100%.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-29 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
this secret is awesome

There was an amazing Sherlock fanfic told from the parrot's point of view. I hope the OP has come across it because it was outstanding and I think they'd enjoy it. The parrot was a wannabe detective!

So you have read Ursula LeGuin's Hainish Cycle books, yes OP? If not, why not?

My family has a bird. I have zero motivation to put any parrots in fiction, though, and I would never get a bird of my own in the future. They are so much work, and I don't think they're really happy unless they have pretty much full time care or a place to fly around in. Most caged parrots are pretty unhappy, frustrated creatures in my experience and what I've seen and read about them.

For such a long-living creature, they can be very miserable in human homes, and many of them seem to end up as rescue creatures. It takes the shine off birds in fiction for me. :/ Even just having one in the family seems like a huge responsibility. Stubborn, loud, angry, plucking feathers...and when you try to feed her healthy foods, half the time she won't cooperate. She can be very charming with the words she knows...she's fairly healthy and sort of socialized...but she's not a happy, docile pet by any stretch.

I think the ideal fictional bird might have a very happy life, with a great bond with someone, lots of socialization, great eating habits, etc. But real life is too close with the less than ideal for me to really believe or enjoy it.

OP, just in case you haven't read it, Flaubert wrote a famous story about a woman who befriends a parrot.

Everything should have more birds. There is nothing that is not improved by birds

Children's book series "Swallows and Amazons" has a good parrot character. He features quite heavily in the second book, Swallowdale.

...I always wanted to know more about Motochika's parrot, from Sengoku Basara. At least knowing it's name would have been cool :(
