Hermione Granger. If you don't think she was a villain, you weren't paying attention.

How so?

(I'm mildly concerned this is a troll and I've taken the bait, but... giving you the benefit of the doubt. If you're serious, I'm interested.)

Explain.

Morally ambiguous hero =/= villain.

Going to have to agree. All of her actions are in the name of the greater good; she just doesn't always see them as being particularly bad when some of them are. (And even some of that's more the writing. JKR apparently doesn't think literally scarring Marrietta for life was harsh. I love JKR, but... wow.)

Harsh but fair imo

When you're running a borderline-illegal militant youth group, you can't fuck around with little niceties like that. Gotta do what you gotta do. For the struggle.

If it wasn't permanently scarring, I might agree. It is the whole lifelong permanent scarring that no one else could undo and that Hermione didn't care enough to come up with a counter for that puts it into villain territory. Holy shit, isn't one of the things that makes Umbridge so evil that she permanently scars her victims?

I agree it was morally wrong, I just think it was justified

No one said paramilitary conflicts were easy

Yeah, that's the kind of shit Goblins: Life Through Their Eyes uses to show that a villain is truly irredeemable.

Yeah but no one should use Goblins as a standard for anything, as it is real dumb and bad

The idea was simple. Make sure nobody ever did it, or at least nobody ever did it more then once. That traitorous bitch took the vow, she should have known better.

I was always suspicious, tbh.

Darn. It's working for me. I'm not sure how to make it work for you.

It's just a Mean Girls quote. "That's why her hair is so big, it's full of secrets."

A+ use of Mean Girls gif.

J. K. Rowling is the creepy absolutist. Hermione is just her most common proxy. (And let's face it, Rowling is nowhere NEAR as bad as L.E. Modesitt or Mitchell Graham.)

Calling JKR a creepy absolutist is pretty far fetched.
