It seems like anything in between would just change the nature of the character completely. Might as well make a brand new character.

The first I think I could roll with, but I don't much care for these type of fics. Generally I have no problems with AU's, but if the character is changed so much they don't feel like themselves I won't read it.

I can't get with the second one. I hate it when people are out of character. Maybe if they ramped it up so that all allegiances flipped, or if the good guy thing was a mask all a long (via-Aizen style, without the broken-ness) it'd be fine. Like all fanfic things, it depends on the writing being good.

How about things like evil!AUs?

I especially agree with #2. I only like fic about characters I really love being evil if the contrast between the canon and the fic characterizations is SO mind-boggling that it has to be an "explore this character through a 100% contrast" thing, not an OOC thing.

I feel the same, probably because if it's an in-between character the dark fic treats it as if the character is already that bad. With so called pure character it's more obviously a what-if or character study type and that contrast interests me more.

What if character x was evil is so rarely done well, that it's ruined the whole thing for me.

Harry Potter fandom has some of the worst of them. Yes, Ron can be a prat and Hermione can be annoying, but that doesn't make them flat out evil. So much ridiculous twisting to make them mean meanies who mean so the Slytherins and Dark Lord can heal Harry's heart. Ok!

The only way "what if character X was evil" works for me is if it's obvious the author doesn't actually hate the character or think they're bad, but are making them evil solely for the sake of a "what if?" AU or a way to play around with the character.
