I get this feeling that this type of AU is so popular because it lets people relive their HS days in a safe, and often very idealised setting. There's a lot of media telling us that those are the best times of our lives, but for many people it's anything but. So they live vicariously through AUs with their favourite characters.

I feel you, anon. I had a bit of a similar thing with Spice & Wolf - I kind of saw me and my bf in the characters, and when their relationship started to get rocky, I felt so uncomfortable I put the series down.

I get why some people would be uncomfortable with it for fetish reasons, but it's also a way for trans people to indulge in some fantasy as well.

(Though I don't especially care what people jangle their jiggler to.)

Note: I never saw a single ep of the show, but I know from fandom osmosis that a) it's a very popular slash ship and b) apparently people thought it was problematic/distasteful because of power imbalance, or maybe just because Hannibal is a creep who eats people
