How many people actually think genderbending is ~bad~? I'm going to guess a vocal minority.

That's the thing that annoys me about these kinds of debates. There's no way to really gauge how many people hold the opinion. So you can say that everyone in fandom thinks that, and no one thinks that, and have just about the same amount of validity. So arguments tend to get real dumb real fast.

Most likely! But liking/drawing/reblogging genderbend stuff is a quick way to get yourself on Tumblr's shit list... So if that's the area you conduct your fandom activities in, you might have a lot of trouble, I suppose?

I balked at Tumblr a long time ago purely because I thought the user interface was terrible.

And I still think that. But it's a bonus that I don't have to deal with the other shit too xD

I've run into people who dislike it because they think it's about changing one gender to write your favorite pairing while avoiding actual slash, especially if it's a "het" pairing instead of same sex. But that isn't, currently, the typical reason people are writing it in 2015, they're mostly doing it to explore what life would be like for the character if they had different genitals, with maybe some sex too. I write tons of Rule 63, and I love slash. I'm a huge slasher and have been writing slash for years- and I only tend to Rule 63 characters who I've already been writing slash for.

Dude I'm with you. 99% of my Rule 63 is changing everyone into women to get my femslash on on top of the other stuff that goes with AUing.

Doing it the other way around- changing female characters into men, seems to be more rare, because most fandoms have enough men in them already and already tend to spend more time on men's stories

I think a lot of people genderbend specifically to create more (fem)slash - the opposite of what people are freaking out about in this case.

Though honestly unless your reasoning for wanting to draw a slash pairing as het is "ew icky gays" then I don't think it's that big a deal either way.

Sometimes I do it specifically to make a point about how valid my slash pairing is but...basically, if I really like a pairing I want to see it written in every possible way. And it's been years since I've encountered someone who actually genderbended because they actually were afraid to write slash.

in our rp community you can't do it officially without getting shit from all sides. anonymously they amount to about half of all prompts.

I've heard that genderbending is problematic because it's a way of playing with gender in fiction that avoids dealing with trans issues. The argument goes something like, "well, if you want to write 'x' as a woman, why not write them as a trans woman?!?" Ignoring the fact that maybe what the author wishes to explore is the experience of a character who has been assigned a certain sex from birth that happens to be different from their canon sex. On the less virulent end, I've heard people suggesting that the term 'genderbend' be changed to 'cis-swap' as a compromise.

Yep, I've heard this all over the place too. But people ignore that making characters into trans characters instead of just swapping their gender, can make actual trans people very uncomfortable.
