I've run into people who dislike it because they think it's about changing one gender to write your favorite pairing while avoiding actual slash, especially if it's a "het" pairing instead of same sex. But that isn't, currently, the typical reason people are writing it in 2015, they're mostly doing it to explore what life would be like for the character if they had different genitals, with maybe some sex too. I write tons of Rule 63, and I love slash. I'm a huge slasher and have been writing slash for years- and I only tend to Rule 63 characters who I've already been writing slash for.

Dude I'm with you. 99% of my Rule 63 is changing everyone into women to get my femslash on on top of the other stuff that goes with AUing.

Doing it the other way around- changing female characters into men, seems to be more rare, because most fandoms have enough men in them already and already tend to spend more time on men's stories

I think a lot of people genderbend specifically to create more (fem)slash - the opposite of what people are freaking out about in this case.

Though honestly unless your reasoning for wanting to draw a slash pairing as het is "ew icky gays" then I don't think it's that big a deal either way.

Sometimes I do it specifically to make a point about how valid my slash pairing is but...basically, if I really like a pairing I want to see it written in every possible way. And it's been years since I've encountered someone who actually genderbended because they actually were afraid to write slash.
