I get why some people would be uncomfortable with it for fetish reasons, but it's also a way for trans people to indulge in some fantasy as well.

(Though I don't especially care what people jangle their jiggler to.)

i guarantee it's only kids who think it's bad tbh. When I was pre-transition and in high school, ~genderbend~ stuff was like water for me bc it was one of the only ways I could get anything close to an outlet for myself, and I KNOW I'm not the only one. Now kids have no context or recognition of even just barely older trans peoples' relationship with this stuff so it's automatically bad and problematic.
Also, tbh the people who are mad that r63s aren't trans versions of the characters tend to have really... not...great... ideas about what representing a character as trans means.

I don't think they're bad either, I'm not super into genderbending characters myself but I think it can be interesting from a story-telling and design perspective.

I pretty much never read genderbend AUs, so maybe those are all really awful and transphobic, who knows. And I definitely see the problem with, say, changing one half of a popular slash pairing into a girl. But I honestly do not see how art of "what if character X was male/female/other?" is problematic any more than racebends or species swaps or any of the other what-if designs that fanartists like to do.

I think that there's nothing wrong with gender-bends too, anon.
And i think that the "If you want to change the gender of a character why not making them trans" argument is stupid as fuck for many reasons.

I also am coward and while I've toyed with the idea of exploring what would happen if comic Captain America was born a woman for years, I never acted on it because I'm terrified of the backslash that will probably come (I'm an artist that's trying to become a professional, so asking for the hate on a platform like tumblr it's really not a solid business plan)

I like it if everyone is gender bent. I won't watch elementary until the series is over because I want to make sure they didn't change Watson to a girl just so she and Sherlock could fuck and it would be ok (for homophobes).

Though they, like anything else, can be written badly. I'm not much into them though, they almost never seem to find the right balance for me - enough changes that I can believe the character grew up the other gender in society with enough similarities that they still feel like the same character.

The only time I really have a problem with it is if it's for a slash/femslash ship to make it het. But that's really it, and I'm not going to shout down people who do, I'll just avoid it. Otherwise, they're fine and harmless fun and I've read some trans* individuals used it as a way of experimenting.

And the "just make a character trans" argument never really worked with me because it's not really the same. Not to mention rule!63 stories tend to come about it in two ways:

1) was always that gender to begin with (as in what if Steve Rogers was born a girl/always a girl) or
2) magical/science/whatever transformation (as in what if Steve Rogers was hit by chaos magic and suddenly has a female body)

The former would mean the intent was to keep them cis (Steve Rogers is born a girl and the writer intends to write her as such) while the latter implies that just because they have physically changed genders doesn't mean they just suddenly start thinking themselves as the opposite sex. (Steve Rogers is now female because magic! But he still thinks of himself as a he and isn't suddenly going to go around thinking of himself as Stephanie)

I think there's a big difference between writing a fic where someone makes a character transgender and rule 63 fic, where they just write the characters like they've always been genderbent.

I'm not a fan of it. I like to take my favorite characters as they come and have no need of what-ifs in this particular instance. It particularly irks me when it's done to something like Free! because of the lack of those types of shows for girls and if I wanted something like that with girls, KyoAni also makes them (and I do enjoy K-On). I just want my fan service that is aimed at me and not for children (yeah, a lot shonen has hot guys, but that shit is aimed at kids) sometimes.
