I think the writers did a pretty crap job trying to get all that across to the viewers, especially since the creators had to explain why things turned out the way they did after the anime was over. If they'd spent more time on Haru in the Australia episode instead of introducing us to Rin's dog, having Rin's foster mom be all 'Just kiss already, teehee *wink wink*' and repeating the Rin was sad in Australia part, maybe things would have seemed less silly and sudden.

eh, maybe. imo the creators didn't need to explain anything, I got what they were trying to convey before the interviews came out. I also knew all along that Haru was going to go pro by the end - I was more surprised after I finished the series and saw there were a lot of people who thought there was a chance he wouldn't. Personally I think they did a fine job and I liked it.

The creators didn't need to explain it, Haru explained it himself in episode 13.
