(Anonymous) 2015-08-30 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)A professional or work environment isn't the same, as everyone has other tasks to do, generally the same idea of what they are working for or at, chose to be employed there, and aren't forced by teachers to interact with each other...

(Anonymous) 2015-08-30 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)And why high school AU fic for characters not in that setting are boring, OOC, and make no sense whatsoever.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-30 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)As long as you say the same of every other AU where characters not originally from those settings are put into vastly different situations, you're not a hypocrite.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-30 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)IMO it's just as prevalent, it just takes different forms.

My general observations: in the workplace it's often more insidious but also harder to get rid of because the people who do it and get away with it have pulled the right strings and they're hard to dislodge, even if other professionals - including their own higher-ups - are vocal about wanting them gone. In school I think it's kind of the opposite - the authorities can get rid of a bully student* but they often can't be arsed to.
*teachers are a whole 'nother ballgame...

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 09:49 am (UTC)(link)- it can make your life a living hell
- if there are few other schools in your area, you can't even transfer unless your family moves house
- but you still have food and a place to live in, as the bullying doesn't have any impact on this
Bullying in work:
- it can make your life a living hell
- if there are few other jobs because of the economy, you can't even leave
- if the bully forces you to finally resign, you can lose your home and have no money for food, because unemployment won't cover you voluntarily leaving your job.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-30 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)Er... do you mean besides real high school, college, or really any sort of educational environment? And besides work if you replace "classes" with "departments"? I get that you're trying to lay out the appeal for HS AU, but claiming it's a unique situation when it's a situation that a lot of people face Mondays through Fridays is sort of... well, funny, but inaccurate.

*the actual number depends on the shift, some aren't open all day
Biggest differences are we're all functionally in one peer group even though our ages range from like 22 all the way to retirement, and there are far fewer people in my building than I went to high school with. Also the actual group of people we see doesn't change roughly every hour. And I usually eat lunch by myself.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 03:09 am (UTC)(link)What I find weak about your argument is that you seem to think that it's somehow a snap to get a job transfer or to find a new job and I can assure it is NOT that easy. Even transferring within a company is going to mean a lot of paperwork and a whole procedure to go through, much like transferring high schools. "Find another job" may mean uprooting your whole family and moving and that's only IF you can find work elsewhere. I don't know where you are, but there aren't many places where people are that blasé about quitting or moving jobs because it means a serious upset of your whole life and career.
Obviously being an adult gives one more choices and flexibility, but it's a bit disingenuous to pretend that high school and work are worlds apart in terms of one's involuntary social interactions.
