The above is also why bullying is so rampant in high school and not in other places like college or office buildings. You're legally required to attend school and meet people you hate every day and can't opt to not be in class with. There's a lot of forced daily interaction that you find nowhere else.

Bullying is not rampant in offices? Hahahahahaha NO. Workplace bullying is rife, and if you don't know this you are either very young or exceptionally lucky in your work.

Not as much as high school was the point. If you're going to say office bullying overall is worse and more rampant than the kind in high school you are either old enough to have forgotten what it was like or were exceptionally lucky enough to attend an atypical high school.

I wasn't even bullied, but it was everywhere.

nayrt

IMO it's just as prevalent, it just takes different forms.

There's a lot in both places and a lot of individual variation in experiences.

My general observations: in the workplace it's often more insidious but also harder to get rid of because the people who do it and get away with it have pulled the right strings and they're hard to dislodge, even if other professionals - including their own higher-ups - are vocal about wanting them gone. In school I think it's kind of the opposite - the authorities can get rid of a bully student* but they often can't be arsed to.

*teachers are a whole 'nother ballgame...

The mandatory attendance and mingling with other people is a part of the bullying yes, but age plays a huge role, too. This is is precisely why you don't see the same level of bullying in adult workplaces. It's not that bullying never occurs, it just doesn't occur with the same frequency.

Bullying in high school:
- it can make your life a living hell
- if there are few other schools in your area, you can't even transfer unless your family moves house
- but you still have food and a place to live in, as the bullying doesn't have any impact on this

Bullying in work:
- it can make your life a living hell
- if there are few other jobs because of the economy, you can't even leave
- if the bully forces you to finally resign, you can lose your home and have no money for food, because unemployment won't cover you voluntarily leaving your job.

It must suck so much to be in the US where unions are so weak :(
