"HS AU is a unique environment. How many other places forcibly squish so many random people of varying interests into one building then force you to hang out with them for 8+ hours a day? Then create artificial social structures by differentiating you into remedial, standard, and honors classes, then again by year?"

Er... do you mean besides real high school, college, or really any sort of educational environment? And besides work if you replace "classes" with "departments"? I get that you're trying to lay out the appeal for HS AU, but claiming it's a unique situation when it's a situation that a lot of people face Mondays through Fridays is sort of... well, funny, but inaccurate.

It is tho, OP. Because departments rarely interact, but classes? You see each other i the same cramped hallways and shit between them, and you rarely have all the same students in the same classes throughout the day. You switch around and see new people, and you're all in the same hell.

Must depend on your job. I have an office job and have to interact with people within my department and outside of it. Like high school, they're people with varying interests with whom I don't necessarily have a lot in common except that we're all working in the same place. You could sort of argue that high school prepares you for this, so claiming that high school is some unique environment is a big stretch.

Students also usually don't have the option to switch schools or move away if it gets really bad. Changing or quitting jobs is a luxury but the option is there if it gets to it, unlike school which is mandated by law. Being a minor puts students in a much more vulnerable and hopeless position if anything goes wrong

Eh, at my job we interact on a daily basis with three or four other departments just inside our own large room* and another half dozen in other parts of the building.

*the actual number depends on the shift, some aren't open all day

Biggest differences are we're all functionally in one peer group even though our ages range from like 22 all the way to retirement, and there are far fewer people in my building than I went to high school with. Also the actual group of people we see doesn't change roughly every hour. And I usually eat lunch by myself.

With a job tho you can probably transfer if it gets too bad, tho. Or find another job. You can't switch schools without MOVING, which isn't feasible for the most part.

True! Though there's some variation with both scenarios.

That depends on where you are. It's possible to transfer from public to private school without moving, and some states/districts allow for transfers under special circumstances. It's hard, but not impossible.

What I find weak about your argument is that you seem to think that it's somehow a snap to get a job transfer or to find a new job and I can assure it is NOT that easy. Even transferring within a company is going to mean a lot of paperwork and a whole procedure to go through, much like transferring high schools. "Find another job" may mean uprooting your whole family and moving and that's only IF you can find work elsewhere. I don't know where you are, but there aren't many places where people are that blasé about quitting or moving jobs because it means a serious upset of your whole life and career.

Obviously being an adult gives one more choices and flexibility, but it's a bit disingenuous to pretend that high school and work are worlds apart in terms of one's involuntary social interactions.

I switched like 3 High Schools without moving. But this is Canada...
