Yep. That's why original stories about high school are so interesting and popular.

And why high school AU fic for characters not in that setting are boring, OOC, and make no sense whatsoever.

As long as you say the same of every other AU where characters not originally from those settings are put into vastly different situations, you're not a hypocrite.

I don't follow. You take characters in a setting where they're not supposed to interact like that, and you want to see what happens if you put them in a space where they are - what about that doesn't make sense?
