I agree completely. I have no interest in any actor beside the character they play.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-30 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's a fine attitude..

But I do want to emphasize one thing: I think, most of the time, the reason some people treat it differently than you do is because it really does sincerely bum them out when actors do things. It's just a different point of view.

I think some people do get bummed out like you said, but there's more to it generally. There's a whole internet culture that loves to pick apart celebs and enjoy in the schadenfreude of fans and fandom fall out. Theses people see their faves fall apart and want others to suffer. They make up ridiculous rumors, and revel if the celeb does fall from grace.

I really think that's the only reason people like digging up dirt on celebs anymore, is to keep spreading the "problematic" hurt around.

It makes me sad to hear about people being shitty in general. But I don't really get attached to actors - even in the rare cases where a live-action character is very interesting to me - so I feel you there, OP. (I do like finding out what other things they've been in just for fun and see what kinds of characters they typically play, though.)

That's not a totally unreasonable attitude to have. Meeting actors in person has sometimes been a rude awakening for me on various levels and even lessened my enjoyment of said show for a long while afterward. Sometimes it's been great though, but ultimately it makes me hyper aware of how much of it is about business and less about fun.

Sometimes it's good to just enjoy the aspects you like and ignore the rest.

I think conventions are a big problem for that, they encourage confusing an actor and character, and charge a lot of money for it.

So the actor is at work, and being paid well to talk to fans and have photos etc, but some fans, not all, will take it all seriously and not for the paid performance that it is.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-30 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree OP. I do the same, but I do it for different reasons. Knowing more about an actor's personal life or beliefs colours my opinions of them and then I just can't enjoy anything any more. So I rather not know anything at all. It's better and easier that way.

I try not to get attached to celebrities' actual personalities even when they seem super humble and nice cause it makes me less of a hypocrite for sometimes being indifferent to it when they're assholes (not like it doesn't bother me when they say something shitty, but it has to be reeaally awful to affect my enjoyment of what they perform/write, etc).

I feel this so hard.

I don't need to know your girlfriend is a Nazi, yo.

I'll admit that I enjoy watching and reading actor interviews and do get attached to them, but I don't see anything wrong with ignoring them completely outside the roles they play.

Doing that is probably a good idea in some cases, especially if you have trouble differentiating actors and their characters. (For the most part I do not have that problem.)

What about people who aren't actors, and the only public face they have is themselves?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-30 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think those are included in the umbrella of fictional characters

Mi scusi, I'm a bit bleary eyed today and read the secret on my phone before getting on my computer.

I don't think it's completely off, you could argue reality TV is fake and real at the same time :)

I'm pretty much the same, I care way more about the character than the actor and often don't care that much about said actor(like I might think they're cute and seem nice but that's about as far as it goes. I don't care about their private lives at all).

(Anonymous) 2015-08-30 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Not to mention the fact that what a lot of actors and their publicists dish out is bullshit anyway.

Generally I have no interest in actors. I can barely remember their faces or names or link the 2 so I don't really care. I'm not following actors from role to role so *shrug*

I wish I never found out about Adam Baldwin's general asshatery.
Jayne was only fun when he was fictional.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I like to find out if actors are married/taken, gay, assholes, or some combination of those. I hate the way I get crushes on actors so easily and the above things will kill the crush dead for me, so best to nip it in the bud. The danger is they might turn out to be single, nice, and into women and I'll have to be careful.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. Being a Kraftwerk fan suits me very well because of this.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, same here. To the point that I hate it when people write fic crossing over the same actors' different characters.
