I feel you, anon. I had a bit of a similar thing with Spice & Wolf - I kind of saw me and my bf in the characters, and when their relationship started to get rocky, I felt so uncomfortable I put the series down.

that feel... i know it

That's a common enough trouble, OP! Though I think the second season was excellent because of the subject matter, it also had such a vastly different feel to it that I got whiplash.

I did not at all expect it to go in that direction, and since I started the series because it was a fun, feel good anime with fanservice it was an adjustment.

You didn't miss out on much. It's a cute series but it doesn't live up to the S1, mostly thanks to a seriously underwhelming last stretch. They solved the Haru thing in a pretty silly manner and the Sousuke thing in one that can at best be described as ridiculous. (the extra episode is gold, though)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
"a silly manner"

ah the smell of a bitter makoharu in the morning.

it's been explained time and time again by the creators why exactly it worked and why exactly it was necessary. now you just sound ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
You sound more ridiculous bringing a ship war into this for absolutely no reason. Just cause you didn't think the end was silly doesn't mean others can't, so don't be so weird and defensive about it?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Most people who were in Haru's position aren't so lucky to just transform into a bird and fly away.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 10:59 am (UTC)(link)
wtf is this reply

I agree with them and I ship Rin/Haru/Makoto soooo

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 12:44 pm (UTC)(link)
So anyone who doesn't like Haru's resolution is automatically a MakoHaru shipper, in your opinion?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Makorin, actually. I'm not really in the fandom, so I've no idea what Word Of God is on the ending of Eternal Summer. But if the creators need to explain their storytelling choices, then they weren't doing storytelling right.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-30 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know that feeling, OP. I just didn't enjoy s2 as much as s1 and I think that's part of the reason why - also the part where 90% of Haru's storyline hit too close to home for me, and then, oh, I guess everything gets solved by being dragged abroad by a BFF, cool. WHY ISN'T MY LIFE THAT EASY

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
everything wasn't magically solved by being dragged abroad...

it was the one thing he needed. he couldn't get it at home, the creators explained that. and it was only that specific BFF who could do it.

it wasn't easy. it just happened to work out for him. he didn't just show up at the airport ~magically healed~ it was a process.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 06:16 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that people can only defend the writing with cries of "The creators explained it!" is a testament to how shitty it was.

Just become an Olympic swimmer, problem solved.

Can't really say I feel the same, but I'm glad Rin stopped being a whiny baby in it and he became one of my favorite characters.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
I still does for me :(
His got resolved too easily for my tastes, but the fear of facing the world is still something I feel.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Both Haru and Sousuke's stories really made me emotional.
Having a talent but not knowing what to do with your life.
Having a dream but not the ability/health to pursue it.

Since I have health issues that prevented me from pursuing my dream career, Sousuke's shoulder thing really resonated strongly with me.

The second season, particularly the second half of it, was so damn stressful for me. And I really didn't like the way they tied up Haru's storyline; he ended up doing the thing he'd been stating throughout the season that he didn't want to do.

Also in this picture, Rin is staring right at Haru's ass and this makes me giggle a lot. |3

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
The thing with Haru is just because he says he doesn't want to do something doesn't always mean he actually doesn't want to do it. There were hints all along that he did in fact want to swim pro. He definitely had hangups about it, he was worried about being all alone and about the pressures of pro swimming - plus he wasn't ready to decide his future.

But then he saw his friend who was aiming to go pro had gone through all those hardships and had come out okay, and Rin got to see amazing sights along the way. I think it put Haru at ease enough to think clearly and see that going pro wasn't as scary as he was making it out to be in his head. And then he was able to take the next step of realizing he wanted that.

Sorry to go all tl;dr!

I think the writers did a pretty crap job trying to get all that across to the viewers, especially since the creators had to explain why things turned out the way they did after the anime was over. If they'd spent more time on Haru in the Australia episode instead of introducing us to Rin's dog, having Rin's foster mom be all 'Just kiss already, teehee *wink wink*' and repeating the Rin was sad in Australia part, maybe things would have seemed less silly and sudden.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 11:40 am (UTC)(link)
eh, maybe. imo the creators didn't need to explain anything, I got what they were trying to convey before the interviews came out. I also knew all along that Haru was going to go pro by the end - I was more surprised after I finished the series and saw there were a lot of people who thought there was a chance he wouldn't. Personally I think they did a fine job and I liked it.

The creators didn't need to explain it, Haru explained it himself in episode 13.

It's fine, I just didn't catch any of that while watching. XD I remember being incredibly frustrated with how Haru was treating everyone tho.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-03 06:03 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, I'm in the other corner. I don't know what to do with my life, so I would totally pick a show that explores that sort of thing.
