Note: I never saw a single ep of the show, but I know from fandom osmosis that a) it's a very popular slash ship and b) apparently people thought it was problematic/distasteful because of power imbalance, or maybe just because Hannibal is a creep who eats people

As someone who watches the show, I'm not even sure how to answer.

I'll go ahead and say "yes" it's canon that Hannibal and Will love each other, but the exact nature of that love is kind of up in the air. (The show's creator Brian Fuller calls their story "a love story", and has said several times that they love each other though their relationship has never been physical. I definitely feel like they have romantic feelings for one another, but at least for Will that's something he struggles immensely with and fights against. He occasionally takes pleasure in telling Hannibal he doesn't want to see him or doesn't like him, but when it comes down to it...he doesn't mean it. He wishes he did; his life would be so much better that way, lol.)

They have never actually said the words "I love you" to each other, though they've suggested as much to other characters. Hannibal had scenes with Bedelia where he does this (can't remember the exact line, but it was something like, "With respect, you can't help who you fall in love with"), and Will had a scene with Reba in the finale where he tells her there isn't anything wrong with her for having loved Dolarhyde. It might be unspoken, but the intent is that Will loves Hannibal and knows exactly what she's going through. Bedelia also suggests (multiple times) that Will is Hannibal's bride and Will ends up asking her "Is Hannibal in love with me?" She says yes.

So there's loads of suggestion (this isn't even the half of it, tbh; the two had a sort of surrogate daughter, Hannibal planned for them to run away together at one point and Will admits wanting to) and I do think it would be extremely difficult to not see it, but there's no kissing or conventional love confession. (I mean, Hannibal leaves Will a dead body shaped like a heart, so there's that. They also hug and nuzzle in the finale after killing together while Hannibal wears an ecstatic look on his face.)

They're canonically obsessed with each other and drawn to each other in the most fucked up way possible and absolutely everyone around them sees it, but I'm not sure at what point you would even say "They're canon". (For instance, some people were upset they didn't kiss at the end of the finale. Apparently the actors did in some takes but it was cut out because Brian felt it looked a bit too much like fanservice. I'm fine without the kiss because everything else about the scene is incredibly intimate and weirdly sensual, but some people want a good old fashion lip lock.)

It can be interpreted that way (I would say it's hard not to) and WoG has been rather... ambivalent (on one hand BF keeps talking about the series as a love story, but on the other hand he keeps mentioning ~deep friendships~ and Will being straight) so... really, unless there's a 4 season (which is unlikely) it's up to interpretation.

I have friends who've been pushing me to watch. I don't want to because Hannibal as a character bores the shit out of me. It's a shame because it looks like the show went into some Twin Peaks territory.

But how CAN you care about characters you don't know exist yet? You watch the show, you start to care. That's basically the point of it. There's many a show that has drawn me in with the allure of a bit of slash, and inevitably I become attached to more than just the two main dudes. And not just characters either; the style and dialogue, set-design and costuming (especially in Hannibal's case) leaves a lasting impression too. So shallowness can sometimes be a good incentive...I guess is my point?

Well, Hannibal and Will are the main characters so I feel like wanting to watch for their relationship specifically makes perfect sense. That's the one relationship that the show focuses on most.

Their screwed up relationship is fascinating but even beyond that, the other cast members are great too and the storytelling and visuals are something else. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you do watch.

(As for the fic, I just started searching for it and I've been disappointed thus far. I haven't gotten far so there's plenty of time for that to change, but there's a surprising amount of fluff and fluff is the last thing I want from this pairing, lol. Not just fic either! I was listening to a Hannibal/Will fanmix this morning and actually burst out laughing at how OOC one of the songs was.)

I haven't specifically started looking for fic yet, but I do remember there being a ton of fluff from when I browsed before. I just want a dark continuation, lol.

It's weird, with different fandoms, even serious ones, I can want to read crack and fluff fic, but with other fandoms, I want fic as close to the tone of the show as possible.

I see nothing wrong with this, lol. You might end up enjoying the rest of it, too, or you might not, but I hope you enjoy it either way! It's very very slashy and pretty much canon by the end (not overtly sexual but unquestionably an extremely dark love story where the l word is even used), plus it's not at all shy about the physical beauty of the leads and takes many, many opportunities to get them out of their clothes (as far as network standards would allow). From the early S1 scene where Will walked out of his house in quite revealing shorts, I knew it was something special, lolol. It's not just for the beefcake, either, they're dressed down in non-sexual situations where a person wouldn't actually be wearing ten layers of clothes or immediately produce a big fluffy bathrobe from nowhere or whatever the fuck. There's an overall comfort with their bodies that you don't tend to get with straight showrunners or other creators. And even with their faces, it's hard to explain. Just a different eye that appreciates everything in front of it on many levels, very rich. Richard Armitage also wears undies for much of his role in the second half of S3 (plus two or three full body nude shots from the back that were blurred for tv) if you're into him.

This show has so much clothes porn. Seriously, everyone is so pretty and stylish.

Hannibal and Bedelia being the most obvious examples (I could look at them all day; they truly has some of the best outfits on TV. Everything is perfectly tailored) but Will always looks good even when he's dressed casually and Alana's wardrobe this season has been on point.

And of course Richard being half naked constantly. His body is a temple, though I feel weird thinking so given his entire character. (Same for Hannibal really, but Mads could use those cheekbones as a weapon and it's hard to not appreciate how firm and fit he is. Bedelia's dresses are practically sinful too.)

But the show is shit, the story was butchered. Books are better, all three of them.

But if the slash is all you want, well, apparently Fuller teased the shit out of that, therefore ruining Hannibal's character and ruining Will, who was portrayed, imo, better in the Red Dragon film. He wasn't some fucking woobie.

I started out loving the show, and singing its praises everywhere. By the end of the second season, I really disliked it, for a variety of reasons. However if you like the idea of a character being tortured and gaslighted and then having a "love" relationship with the person who did it to him, then the show could be for you. It ended up not being the show I had hoped for, but it definitely has slash if you like dark and twisted. (Or if you can be like 90% of fandom and somehow turn that dark and twisted into cute and fluffy.)

I get the appeal of their fucked-up dynamic! But I wanted a "bad end" for this Will to only be in fic. I wanted Will to win canon, even in a small way. Now it seems like just another grimdark thing. Plus I've heard people say Jack, Alana, etc. were given the short end of the stick as characters too.

But some other fans were satisfied, so whatever floats your boat.

Seems like one of those fandoms I'd read AU fic and just refer to a wiki for. That's how I read Teen Wolf fics. Never seen a single episode, but with the info fandom provides, I can generally make my way through AU fics easily.

I really like the show and am currently watching S2, but slash is a super fine reason to watch something. Really. Even if we are talking about a ~serious~ show.
