Okay. I mean writers write what they want to make you happy, not impress you. Nobody's paying them to be the next Tolkien, so ultimately it doesn't matter what their worldbuilding ability is (according to you); they're just having fun. And they're successful because plenty of people do like them or they wouldn't be so popular.

(Besides, I definitely do not thing high school is THE most pedestrian setting out there and I also think it's interesting. This may be because I actually liked high school for the most part, but eh.)

But OP isn't saying that they shouldn't write it, just that they find it crap. Which they're not alone in by a long shot.

they said they would give an author a pass on ALL of their works if they wrote even one HS AU - which is more than just saying "I don't like it"; it's actively judging/discouraging others from writing them.
