Representation for transgender people is equally tough to find in gaming. Both Dangonronpa and Persona 4 managed to blunder transgender representation

But Naoto's plotline...not actually....about...being transgender...???

Neither is the Dangan Ronpa one. But hey, who cares about factual accuracy.

Couldn't comment on that one, since I hadn't played it yet.

I'd argue that the creators fucked up Naoto, but it's P4. Almost every character arc in that game was halfhearted and backed away from itself. Chihiro, though . . . His story is fundamentally about finding the courage to identify as male. Calling him a transgirl misses the point on every possible level.

I'd disagree about Naoto. Naoto crossdressed for a reason and it was social commentary on how women have to act manly to be taken seriously, and how she had to act and dress male in order to take herself seriously. It was about sexism and internalized misogyny, not gender identity.

Naoto may have been more comfortable being a boyish woman, but that's not the same as wearing masculine clothing because one identifies as male.

This. It was very clear from her storyline that her issues stemmed from her being in a very male-dominated field and fearing that she wouldn't be taken seriously unless she pretended to be a man. Unless my memory is wrong, she outright says as much on more than one occasion in the game.

Heck, in the Epilogue she's voluntarily wearing women's clothing. A transman wouldn't be doing that.
