Does anyone really use algebra or trig in real life? I don't think I ever have.

Yes. Without algebra you'd pretty much be standing around going "whuh?" half the time. I mean, even with non-number stuff, you have to understand how to put pieces together. But as I said below, even that's not the stuff you have to study in more advanced algebra courses.

Really, that's algebra? I figured that was, you know...counting. I mean - that's how you give change. Eighty-six cents, plus ten is ninety-six, plus four, so fourteen. I guess it can be *written* as an algebraic statement but...it's just counting.

Weird. I enjoyed algebra, until it was past mid-year and i just couldn't *remember* stuff anymore. Same with geometry. It was enjoyable until i just couldn't remember it well enough to do the later stuff. Bleh.

Tried to help my daughter a few times with her algebra, and it was so completely different than what I was taught - i was useless.

NAYRT - My only pro-algebra argument (heh) is that technically you do use it in terms of reasoning. So for instance, when I do payroll at work, if I'm missing a number I have to know how to find the missing number.

... but that's even just basic algebra. I do not apply polynomials to anything. I don't even really remember what polynomials are. I don't think I understood what they were at the time, actually.

I thought polynomials whir so pretty.

There are a lot of applications of trigonometry in certain technical jobs, yes. Think of surveyors, architects, and anyone in the military having to handle ballistics problems.

But those are more specific examples. Most people aren't any of those jobs.

It's kind of immaterial whether "most people" are those things or not, since the question raspberryrain replied to was "Does anybody use algebra or trig?"

So? I'm meaning just the general public and not people in specialty fields. So no, most people don't use that kind of algebra or trig. *rolls eyes*

Along with "You won't always have a calculator with you!"

NS: I hate calculators. Haaaaaate. I am also constantly surprised by the number of people (dyscalcula[sp?]) aside who cannot do basic math in their head.
