Image: Several people watching the shadow of a man struggling in the arms of two cops.

Text: I wanted Rocky to go out defiant to the end, and was disappointed when he didn't.

Way to miss the point of the movie, self.

I'm convinced that was one of those edits they mandated to try and get the moral scolds to shut up for five seconds. Like those weird additions to the 1932 Scarface, all about "Mind you, we don't actually think gangsters are cool! That would be terrible!"

Yep, the "Keep the Hays Code happy" gambit. I'm ok with movies that have the gangsters come to bad ends as mandated by the Code, but for some reason (Cagney's charisma, maybe?) that particular ending just didn't feel right to me. Having Rocky be unrepentant would have been an equally ok message of "don't let this happen to you!". But hey, different times.

I don't have a strong response to this secret but I want to give you props for making a god damned Angels With Dirty Faces secret

Ah, but was he really scared or pretending to be for the benefit of observers? This was an argument between two of my family members, both long dead. I don't really know which to side with.

Granted, it's been a while since I saw it, but I always assumed, especially given Rocky's face before he's taken away, that he was faking it. I figured Jerry's begging got through to him, so he decided to do one last act of good (plus, then it made the Hays Code happy). Which is part of why this is a secret.
