What comics/manga are you into right now?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-05 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
If it has sequential art and word bubbles, it's fair game.

Oh, I've been following witchy too! What do you think of it so far?

I think it's great! That comic has a pretty nice set of characters and the story/lore is interesting so far. Was a bit indifferent to the drawing style at first but it grew on me pretty quickly, and I can't wait to see what will happen to Nyneve and her mother. And Prill and Tuba too.

Finished This One Summer and Prince of Cats somewhat recently and both are beyond excellent. I'd love to find more shorter, self-contained comic stuff, really. Dunno where to start, unfortunately. :I

Read some Krazy Kat strips and I like them a fair bit. Don't think I'll end up reading all of them, but seems like a good back burner sort of thing.

Also read through most of Takamichi's stuff, because I'm a sucker for well-colored manga. I really dig his SOL stuff, but didn't especially care much for Hyakumanjou Labyrinth, which is a little more action oriented.

Checked out some of Kiyohiko Azuma (mangaka of Yotsuba) earlier works (a Sailor Moon parody doujin and Wallaby) and while I expected them to be a little unpolished, they were a lot more lacking than I was expecting. I, however, discover out he designed this ridiculousness: http://www.anime-ultime.net/images/img5321.jpg

Been following Devil's Candy webcomic for a bit and I've really been enjoying it. The art and humor's actually really good. Waiting for even regularly updated webcomic is the worst and I'm reminded why I usually binge read them instead.

Marathoned Cucumber Quest. The color choices are great, but while I get it's more gag based, it doesn't feel very cohesive. :/

Oh, and checked out a webcomic called eggshells, which had the strongest intro I've read in some time, but now it feels like the author's just churning out pages to keep up with an update schedule or something. They're little better than glorified scribbles. Biggest recent disappointment for me.

I just finished Millennium Snow, Bisco Hatori's other major work besides Ouran Host Club. She took a ten-year hiatus halfway through the story to work on Ouran, and I was honestly surprised she finished MS at all. Anyway I was very satisfied with the ending, even though it was a little rushed.

For comics, I'm reading Ms. Marvel, Sleepy Hollow: Providence, Rat Queens, Gotham Academy, and a few random Doctor Who titles. I'm getting Saga in trade paperback, so as not to drive myself crazy from issue to issue.

Print:

DC's new Starfire and Prez are both fun, but in different ways. Starfire is light and goofy, and I'm picking it up because Atlee is in it now. Prez is really cynical and cutting in a way.

IDW's Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency moves Dirk to San Diego and puts him in the sort of convoluted storm of problems you might expect. It's kind of fun, but I wonder if it would be better to trade-wait so you can read the story in one sitting.

Web:

Shinga's Head Trip is off on some Star Wars fandom / reality warper story right now, which is actually pretty funny. (But it's been delayed three weeks, sadly.) I recommend the archives if you haven't read it.

It looks like John Allison is calling his online work in general Scary Go Round now. It's pretty fun.

Oh, yeah, back to print: Giant Days is really, really good. That's him, too.

Been checking out the scanlations of the early Yu-Gi-Oh manga. It's goofy and all about games like the show, but the violent and twisted stuff is more horror-esque and graphic than the show, with freaky art to match, and the Pharaoh is pretty much a mix between a bugfuck insane teenage Jigsaw and that archetype of the big brother who will go nuclear on the ass of anyone who messes with his li'l bro.
