Oh yes, for many Americans it's considered mandatory at Thanksgiving! It's basically mashed sweet potatoes with extra brown sugar or maple syrup, cinnamon, butter and milk/cream, topped with marshmallows. This is a pretty typical recipe:

It's basically a dessert masquerading as a side dish.

I'm American, and I have never heard of putting marshmallows in sweet potato casserole. o_O

Must be a regional thing.
