As an older American, I can tell you that it wasn't always like that, at least the insane commercialism wasn't like that. That started some time in the early 1990s, I believe...before that there wasn't that big a deal made about it, and it was primarily a holiday for kids.

Yeah, and it never really seemed like something Australia really did before the supermarkets really started to shove it on us around that period.

I may have been a bit sheltered there though, my church has a disdain for Halloween, even if it does acknowledge the likes of Christmas and Easter (and those usually get themed sermons on the closest Saturday).
