As someone who has distanced themselves from a parent as much as I can. It's hard. There are reasons for it, but at the same time I get a lot of the 'you need to make up' from other people in my life. I've even had more than one person tell me it was okay that she stalked me because she's my mother.

So the writing could be somewhat realistic...people tend to give parents a free pass for stuff they shouldn't be given a free pass for.
