Elaborate on how it's queerbaiting, I said.

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/queerbait

queerbait

noun

A person who attracts gay people; a person who acts gay but claims to be straight

A person who attracts gay people

it isn't ScarJo's fault that she's one of the most attractive people on the planet

a person who acts gay but claims to be straight

i didn't see where she claimed anything about her sexuality either way. or indeed where she acted any way about her sexuality. what i saw is where she did a photoshoot.

you need to go into more depth on what it means specifically for this to be 'queerbaiting'. do you think its appeal relies on people thinking that ScarJo is non-het? do you think that there's some claim or implication of being non-het in fact of doing the photoshoot? because if so, i'm pretty sure that's a narrative you're placing on it

Well, I don't know if this is meant to be taken as queerbaiting in the context of the secret. That's why I asked OP, if that was the reason. I don't believe I need to go into any more depth, because it is Not. My. Secret.

Just out of curiosity, how do you interpret a picture of a woman sucking on another woman's ear with the words "If she isn't like this, she shouldn't do it" written over it?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Your post implied that (regardless of what OP thought) you thought it was queerbaiting. I disagreed. Obviously you don't have to go into any more depth, this is the Internet. But I think it's not queerbaiting.

Just out of curiosity, how do you interpret a picture of a woman sucking on another woman's ear with the words "If she isn't like this, she shouldn't do it" written over it?

Don't know what OP meant. Also wasn't responding to OP.

I'd assume the OP of the secret felt it was more appropriation than queerbaiting.

I don't really understand why though. I thought part of supporting LGBT stuff in film was about being like "straight actors shouldn't be all grossed out by the idea of acting as gay characters." I remember that was a big reason everyone admired Ledger and Gyllanhaal in Brokeback Mountain.

Well, a lot of supposedly LGBT stuff in film that is with women is actually mostly about appealing to men and the male gaze. And that makes me uncomfortable. I don't know what the image in this secret is so I can't comment on whether it is something that is like that or not. But M/M stuff in film doesn't tend to be like that so it makes me personally less uncomfortable.

I would say there's about the same level of Not-Shit Representation for men and women in that regard, it's just that women also have another whole separate segment of Shit Representation that's layered on top of that

unfortunately

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I implied no such thing. I asked if those were reasons. OP is free to reject them and correct me. Since you have no other suggestion to offer, I think it's a little rude that you jumped on me for making such an assumption. What if I should happen to be correct, are you going to go after OP?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry if I misread you then.

What if I should happen to be correct, are you going to go after OP?

I wouldn't say I've gone after anyone. I would certainly inquire as to their reasoning. And if I did not agree with that reasoning, I would reserve the right to disagree with it as strenuously as I felt appropriate.

DA

It wouldn't have cost OP anything to type "If she isn't into women" instead if that's really what they mean, so I'm sure being all coy and euphemistic is an attempt to start shit.

Because we all carefully craft our secrets and check for spelling and grammar and have them beta'd to ensure that no confusion could ever come from them? It's not as if any of us ever write a secret on the fly and submit it within a 5 minute span when the urge strikes us.

tbh I think the comm would be better if people did double-check their secrets. not necessarily have them beta'd because that kind of defeats the purpose, but double-check would be good, because some of them are kinda hard to understand.

don't get me wrong, most secrets are better than not having a secret, but I think double-checked secrets would be best.

I won't argue with that. But what I'm saying is, we usually don't. :P

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't want my secrets to be easier to understand. My secrets are more often than not coded messages to other people in the know. It's hit'n'miss, but the reward is great when it's a hit.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Those would be careless mistakes whereas I think wording choices tend to be deliberate. It's not like we're in the kind of era where we have to say someone is "like that" instead of "gay" anymore. Nowadays it just sounds weird.

I assumed the OP meant queerbaiting. It was implied by the secret.

But I haven't seen anything about this shoot that's worse than the usual girls getting it on for the camera kind of stuff.

I have kind of a kink for straights being comfortable enough to queer it up, male or female, as long as they're not all "ew, as if!" about it, so personally I'm happy.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-06 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get what y'all are talking about. I read "if she isn't like that" as "isn't a lesbian." Am I the only one?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
It seems very obvious to me that OP deliberately phrased it that way so that everyone would assume they meant "lesbian" when in fact they meant "kinky".

(Anonymous) 2015-09-07 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
I assumed kinky. Non-het didn't even occur to me.
