Katie Cassidy, the actress who plays Laurel on Arrow, has gotten an insane amount of shit from people in the fandom (the majority of which is from some of the nuttier Olicity fans who consider her a threat to their ship, but some of it comes from others as well). When you start sending actual death threats to someone on twitter because you don't like the fact that their character had is a love interest of another character, it's time to reevaluate your life.

Katie Cassidy as in original-flavor Ruby? Poor woman, she just can't get roles that don't result in batshit levels of hate from fandom.

I thought everybody liked Ruby 1? It was just Ruby 2 who everybody hated because she sucked so much?

na

People tend to hate Ruby 2 mostly because she and Jared fell in love, got married, and have children together. The gall of that woman

Not while season 3 was actually airing. At that time their was a lot of over the top hate and vitriol that was spewed at Ruby 1.0 and Bela, never mind that brief time during hiatus when it was revealed that two women joined the main cast.

After the end of s3 when both were presumably dead the fandom started coming around to both Bela and Ruby. When Gen was introduced as Ruby 2.0 a lot of people who a year before where bashing the hell out of Ruby were suddenly full of nostalgia for Ruby 1.0. And when people realised that Gen and Jared were a thing Ruby 1.0 was suddenly the best thing evar and Ruby 2.0 the incarnation of all that is wrong in the world.

As someone who was a fan of both Ruby and Bela during s3 the evolution of them being reviled to them being lauded as great female characters who got only shafted because of misogyny makes me really fucking angry. SPN is most hypocritical and misogynistic fandom I have seen yet; they really did hate every female character until they were killed off and therefore not a possible LI for the brothers anymore. Then they were suddenly lauded as angels.

But everyone loved Charlie!

Because she was a lesbian and thus not a "threat" to their gay ships~~

So not misogynistic!

There were a lot of people who hated Charlie but it's true that she didn't get nearly as much hate as characters like Ruby did for the reasons you describe. A lot of people disliked her because they thought she seemed too annoying and mary sue-like (these are not my own opinions, just criticisms I've seen a lot). A lot of people seemed pretty relieved when she got killed off

I saw the hate that both of those characters got when it was just mentioned that they would be appearing in the summer before the third season. It was awful. And I didn't mind Ruby and loved Bela from their introductions, so the hate really bothered me.

However, I have to say that I selfishly don't mind much that Bela doesn't seem to be quite as hated now. (There still seems to be a decent amount of hate for her, though. Mostly because she apparently "made the boys look bad" and stuff like that.) I like being able to find some positive gifs and positive posts about her. I suppose that is shallow of me? To not care that some people only changed their attitudes after she was dead and no longer a "threat"?

Eh, not really. You do you, anon. I've been out of the fandom for a long time now, but I'm sure it would be nice to see the girls treated in a nice way nowadays.

I always want to jump in and say that Ruby 2 wasn't that bad! She was actually p great and also very cute! And then I remember what wooden awkward acting that was and I'm sadly forced to say yeahh...not so good.

Holy shit, I completely forgot that she played Ruby (the hair color threw me off). I think people mostly hated Cortese!Ruby though (but I'm sure that Cassidy!Ruby probably got some hate too)

The hair color and not looking like a botoxed twig would through anyone off. At least the twig aspect has gone away.
