I kind of agree. I don't blame Johansson, but who ever's idea it was for the photoshoot. I'm sick and tired of feeling like my sexual orientation is being sold for titillation.

Uh.
There is about a hundred times more m/f sexy stuff being sold for titillation out there. So it's not like lesbians are being singled out.

I think you're not seeing the specific context in which representations of lesbian sexuality are exploited for the male gaze, it's pretty inauthentic and homophobic a lot of the time actually.

Uh, yeah, I'm aware of that. Some m/m stuff is that way, too. And most m/f stuff is inauthentic, and generally leans toward the 'women are sex toys' model. *NO* 'sex' sold for mass consumption is without it's issues.

Me, personally, i would prefer that 'sex sells' vanish from the human brain forever, but...we can but dream.

By inauthentic, I mean, not actually lesbian. That's the major difference here, and why it is so exploitative. Because people will accept this stuff and reject actual lesbian sexuality. Put that in the context of some people including possibly the OP being uncomfortable with the fact that this photoshoot might be more about straights than lesbians, in a world where homophobia exists and heterophobia doesn't.

The stupid thing is they've found sex doesn't actually sell. If you put something sexy in an ad, people remember the sexy but not the product.

I think i remember reading that somewhere before. It's all so irritating. If i see an ad with someone acting sexy/or doing fake sex whatever or even just posing sexy, i get irritated and wonder why the product can't sell without tits (or abs, but mostly tits).

It's just....boring, no matter how aesthetically appealing, and makes me *less* interested in the product.

That's hilarious. Hilariously stupid.

nyart

It gets better! IIRC the people most likely to remember the actual product were women... because they got annoyed. A+ marketing!

I agree with the broader point, but I'm really not sure whether this specific photoshoot is doing that, and I'm not sure that judging it on the basis of the sexual identity of the participants is a very useful test. I think it is possible to have a representation of lesbian sexuality* which is aesthetic and even performative, without it necessarily being exploitative.

*or any other sexuality, for that matter

Oh for sure. I don't have any specific opinion about this photoshoot, I don't know the context in which it was done and promoted.

* Firm opinion that is, I'm just cynical by default as a kinky queer who's seen lots of this stuff over the years and so often been let down that it's not really about acceptance or true representation of my niche sexuality. Hope this is changing.

But hey, that image is hot :)
