Characters who started out as bad but became good

(Anonymous) 2015-09-08 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not villains who redeemed themselves at the very end of the show/movie, but just good-guy characters whose initial characterization (or backstory) was as a bad guy. What are some of your favorite examples?

Fauxlivia is a pretty good example.

Derek Hale, supposedly, but I still disagree with the idea that he was ever, at any point, an actual bad guy. An anti-hero in the beginning, maybe.

The first character I thought of was how The Legend of Koizumi portrays George W. Bush. (I have to admit, it takes a lot of effort to make Bush likable.)

Alex Mahone from Prison Break. He wasn't exaaaaaaaaaactly a bad guy to begin with, but he definitely ended up switching sides.

G'Kar and Londo on B5. Neither were ever completely bad guys, but they were certainly very wrong-headed and placed the advancement of their own species above the common good and did bad things (in Londo's case horrible) in the service of that. They both came around in the end, G'Kar sooner, but not soon enough to save either species.

Wanda and Pietro Maximov. I'm not sure, again, that they were outright evil. But they certainly were working for the wrong guy, but they came around in the end and helped the Avengers.

Does Maglor count? He's the only son of Feanor to survive long enough to regret the kinslayings and the things they did in the name of the Oath that were bad.

+1 to G'Kar and Londo and the Maximoff twins. I don't think Wand and Pietro were outright evil, either, but they were driven by revenge and did some terrible things along the way, before they decided to try to stop Ultron and allied with the Avengers, not least was Wanda loosing the Hulk on a civilian population.

I'd also add Scott Lang, to an extent. He wasn't outright evil, but it was clear that he was an experienced burglar. Even though he did the Vista job for the right reasons, the things he did were still crimes.

Raina on Agents of SHIELD might qualify, too. She was more self-serving and amoral than evil but she still did a lot of nasty things in persuit of her own agenda. But at the end, she did seem to be honestly trying to help others, and she saved Skye's life.

Does Chris Argent count? I wouldn't necessarily call him bad, but he was certainly an antagonist for a while.

I think Root would count too.

I don't think he counts, but it's the "became good" part I doubt. He was never not an antagonist, except maybe for small parts in season 3B (and that was temporary.)

Hmm... I guess I can see where you're coming from as he often goes against Scott and gang, but I don't know, after a certain point I guess I just stopped seeing him as an antagonist even though there were plenty of things he didn't agree with Scott on.

Coordinator Narvin does this. Though he's really more an antagonist getting in people's ways. He may have committed genocide. Though that's a Time Lord thing. They all commit genocide.

Then he has backhanded insults that include 'supremely competent' and it's all downhill from there.
