From what I've read, in the latter part of JNT's reign, he wanted to leave and only stayed on because there was no one else who would do the job and would have cancelled it otherwise.

Also I put most of the blame for the bad parts of the JNT era on Saward TBH - JNT had some responsibility obviously, and he was far from perfect especially wrt publicity, but he was basically a talented producer. The real problem was that (a) Saward sucked and (b) Saward and JNT were an incredibly bad creative match. The Cartmel era is so much better than the Saward era, it's ridiculous.
