I myself notice that for all that I do have followers, if somebody with a big following reblogs it will make my numbers jump drastically. Ergo, to some extent it really is about exposure.

I guess to a certain extent, that's not too different from how it used to be. You were always going to get more traffic if a BNF rec'd you. But it does seem like the set-up of tumblr makes it a little harder for a newbie to break out.

I've also noticed on tumblr that it seems like very few people check the major tags, in part because they're so easily spammed.
