What if those criticisms don't necessarily mean you like the character?

I have plenty towards Hermione, but at the same time, that's why I like her character. She isn't just the "sweet nerdy bookish one." (Well, maybe in the movies.) She can be insensitive. Sometimes in her trying to help others, she makes things worse and/or demeans them. At the beginning of the first book she was actually kind of a Mean Girl. But those flaws are also why I love her. They make her believable. So... yeah, they're criticisms, but it doesn't mean I don't like the character.

I agree with this. I have some criticisms of Hermione, but she's still one of my favorite Potter characters. And she's probably the fictional character I relate to most, but that doesn't make it personal.

Although, I admit, some of the criticisms of SPEW rub me the wrong way because as much as she went about it the wrong way in forcing it on the elves, the idea was not wrong. I really, really, really hate it in fics when authors write the house elves as physically needing slavery. No. Slavery is always wrong, and while Hermione's methods weren't the best, her heart was in the right place.

People do that?

I mean I remember a description of why they like serving humans that I sort of liked (comparing it to collies in domesticated homes herd because instincts) and it was less physically needing it and more of helping being in their nature.

But physically needing it...that's weird

Yes, there are several fics I've read over the years that do that. One in particular had Hermione figuring that out and eventually acquiring Winky. And even more fics that just make enslaving house elves out to not be that bad.

...That's....uh weird. and kind of creepy.

I believe you can think critically about a character and still like them overall. It's healthier than ignoring the character's flaws.
