Oh, man. When i saw 'Carol Anne' being yanked sideways up some stairs in super-fast motion (like they seem to do with almost all horror movies now) i knew it wouldn't stack up to the original. And it seems pretty obvious it doesn't. Why in hell did they have to totally background the mom? And make the psychic Tangina (and Dr. Lesh, too) guys? Too much estrogen for them? Meh.

I love Poltergeist, always will - at least we'll always have that!

It's interesting you mention "too much estrogen" because the remake replaced female characters, turned the mom into, like, that responsible, no-nonsense mom stereotype and gave her nothing to do but be disapproving of her husband bringing home toys they couldn't afford (BUT HELP SAVE THE DAY!?) and made the male characters the heroes. The dad in the original was a decent guy, but he wasn't the hero, the mom was. The remake is very sexist.

I feel like I could write a thesis using these movies on the way Hollywood does modern horror films and a woman's place in them. This is a really good example of sexism in horror and film in general.

Yes! Totally what i got from the review. I mean - i *loved* how goofy they were in the original movie, sitting up late and smoking pot and being dorks. But the mom was brave and she'd do *anything* for her kid and she saved Carol Ann and it was awesome.

I generally hate 'reboot' movies, but when they so destroy the characters all because women, apparently, can't 'be heroes', that just sucks. Contrast what they did here to the 'Descent' movie (2012, i think?) with no men in the cast. Totally awesome, totally fucking scary.

Blech, yes. I know i'm a bit of a shrinking violet when it comes to horror, so i don't watch a lot, but part of that is also how much i *detest* women's roles in most horror films.

That sounds absolutely horrible and just ramps up the unease I've been feeling the last few years. A lot of people don't seem to notice it because it's happened so slowly but we're taking a huge turn backwards when it comes to gender, and it makes me very nervous.
