Re: Stupid nitpicks in media that bother you

It cheeses me off to a disproportionate degree when things from our world, that are tied specifically to places and events and people in our world, are imported into fantasy 'verses where those places, events and people never existed.

I'm looking at the presence of "bourbon" or "sadism" in fantasy worlds, and especially at Sarah Monette's use of the French Revolutionary Calendar in Melusine. (Though I might have forgiven it if Melusine had been just a little less terrible.)

What's wrong with "sadism"? It is a human behaviour, whether sexual or not. The etymology doesn't matter because it's being told in our world language anyway.

This thread was titled "Stupid nitpicks in media that bother you," not "Closely argued and meticulously justified complaints about unforgivable errors in media."
